What is the name of this novel about a small-town girl who becomes a cult movie star?

This novel is about a young woman who becomes a cult movie star, but it's mainly about her relationships with the people in her small-town community. I can only remember that there was a lesbian couple (minor characters) who entered all sorts of contests and always won things. I think she meets most of these people at a restaurant, but I'm not sure. The whole community pitches in with the movie, and it becomes a cult classic, with people dressing up as the characters, etc. At one point, the protagonist is meeting with the showbiz folks and accidentally poops herself. Does this ring any bells for anyone? Thanks--it's driving me crazy that I can't remember the title or author!
