How do I download free movies and what programs do I need?

Everyone I know is downloading movies and I have no idea what I am doing.Then after i download them then how do I burn them onto a cd? My sister gets TV shows and everything even before they are shown on television and she gets movies that aren't even out in the theatres yet.Is this illegal? How can I do it?
